A Biography - In Brief

Born to Shanti Bose and Sunanda Bose, who were both disciples of Uday Shankar, and were associated with him for 14 long years, dancing has been a constant passion for Sulakshana. She was initiated into the Uday Shankar Style of Indian Creative Dance by her parents at the tender age of four. She then went on to receive training in Bharatnatyam at the age of six years from Thankamani Kutty for 8 years. Sulakshana’s forte however lies in Odissi, in which she received training for over 16 years – initially from Guru Giridhari Nayak for 10 years and subsequently from the late Smt. Sanjukta Panigrahi for 6 years.

She has performed extensively on stage and television not only by way of her Odissi Dance recitals, but has also played the lead role of Prakriti in Chandalika, Haratani in Tasher Desh, and Rani Karuna in Samanya Kshati, Uttiya in Shyama and Madan in Chitrangada for most of Nriytyangan’s productions on stage, television and Sa Re Ga Ma’s VCDs of Tagore’s dance dramas.

After having pursued various career options with the best of organizations and institutions, and accumulating diverse experience in areas of journalism, customer relation management, teaching and corporate communications, Sulakshana is now devoting herself completely to the pursuit of dance – both Odissi as well as Uday Shankar Style of Indian Creative Dance.
